If you know me, you know I’m usually talking to the ladies. But today I wanted to give you guys a glimpse into why ladies love fitness, and what you can do to help them make the most of it.

Some of us have spent years building our fitness journeys—carving them into exactly what we want and what we need for self-fulfillment—while others are just starting out. No matter where a woman is on her fitness journey, these things ring true. Keep them in mind the next time your girlfriend, wife, mother, or sister gets in the mindset to train!

1. Fitness Is Crucial to a Woman’s Well-being
The first point I want to get across is how crucial fitness is to a woman’s well-being. Putting exercise at the top of our to-do list does more than cut fat and build muscle—it creates a mood that flows into other parts of our life. When we feel good in our skin, we’re more confident, self-assured, and happy. Those are good things for us and everyone around us.

2. There’s No Such Thing as “Girl Exercises”
Since when are pull-ups, deadlifts, and squats “man exercises”? Women’s bodies move and benefit the same way from those exercises as men’s do. So enough with the pink rubber dumbbells on the opposite side of the weight room. We want to lift heavy, build muscle, feel good, and have badass workouts just like you do.

3. Women Have a Harder Time Achieving Their Ideal Physique
Men need to understand how much harder it is for many women to achieve their ideal physique. We’re dealing with hormone fluctuations all month long and don’t have testosterone working in our favor. We can go from a complete, pump-loving goddess in the gym to feeling bloated and fat the next day. Those ups and downs happen constantly, so the more understanding we can get, the better.

4. Our Workouts Have Depth and Purpose
Whether it’s a personal mission of building strength and self-confidence in the gym, or we’re doing it for our families and our kids, the nice physique we get from working out is really just a bonus for us. Women are in the gym for the same reasons you are: for stress relief, to feel good, to look good, to build muscle, to burn fat, to have “me” time. We want respect just as much, too.

The best thing you can do is support our journey. The positivity a woman walks away with after a good training session spills over into every aspect of our lives—including yours.
