Burnout is real, whether it’s job burnout or burnout from, well, life. Clinical psychologist Julie Smith, based in the UK, explains in the TikTok video above what she believes are three early warning signs you are burning out (like the match she’s holding).

First, there’s disconnection from loved ones. This may manifest as arguing with people around you, Dr. Smith said. Second, you disregard self-care practices such as daily exercise, food intake, and sleep. Speaking of sleep, the third telltale indication you’re heading toward burnout is what she defines as chronic tiredness. “You feel tired all the time but restless, and you can’t sleep at night.”

Psychologist Sherry Benton, PhD, founder and chief science officer of TAO Connect, identified other early signs of burnout as headaches, digestive issues, and symptoms of an anxiety disorder or depression. She told POPSUGAR in a previous interview that if this resonates with you, you may want to shift your focus on yourself. Take a vacation, go for a walk, and lean into experiences that bring you joy. Though there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, well-being starts with finding ways to recharge.
